DABCO-based basic ionic liquid, 1-butyl-4-aza-1-azaniabicyclo [2.2.2]octane hydroxide, has been used as a catalyst for a simple, convenient and rapid method for Knoevenagel condensation of active methylene compounds and various carbonyl compounds affording very high yields. The catalyst can be recycled for several times without much loss of activity.
