Chromosome Cohesion in E.coli

Gloria Simmons

Chromosome cohesion is a mechanism during cell cycle; in which newly synthesized homologous DNA strands remain co-localized prior to segregation. There are studies which have shown that E. coli genome experience chromosome cohesion during cell-cycle. Moreover, the cohesion along the E. coli genome is patchy, where few loci along the genome experience high cohesion (snap loci) compared to others (non-snap loci). It also has been shown that SeqA, single subunit protein, positively regulates chromosome cohesion in E. coli and RecN protein induces cohesion post DNA Double Strand Break (DSB) induction. The importance of cohesion in the regulation of transfer of genetic material process is not yet studied
