Phyto-chemical analysis, radical scavenging and cytotoxic activities of Fragaria nubicola from Kashmir, India
Mohd Yousuf Dar
Objectives: Phytochemical analysis and biological activities of Fragaria nubicola. Methods: The powdered plant material of Fragaria nubicola was successively extracted with dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol and water. The radical scavenging activity of methanolic extract was tested using 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical by TLC and spectrophotometric method. Methanol and dichloro-methane extract was tested against Leukemia (THP-1), Lung (A-549), Colon (Caoc-2) and Liver (HEP-2) cell lines at 50 µg/ml, respectively. Results: The phytochemical analysis of methnolic extract revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins and phenols. The methanolic extract tested showed 71±0.2% radical scavenging activity at 40 µg/ml. The results of cytotoxic activity of methanolic and dichloro-methane extract showed that methanolic extract was only active against the THP-1 and HEP-2 cell cultures. Discussion: Fragaria nubicola showed radical scavenging activity due to flavonoids, tannins, saponins and phenols. Conclusion: The extract could be used to control various oxidative stress related disorders.
