Prevalence of Coronary Risk Factors among Bank Employees

Introduction: Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) accounts for 29% of deaths globally. Bank employees, due to their sedentary life style are at risk of developing CHD and diabetes mellitus. Present study intends to evaluate the prevalence of risk factors for the development of CHD among bank employees. Methods: It is a cross-sectional study for a period of one month. The study population consisted of bank employees working in various banks. Results: The prevalence of risk factors of CHD is as follows: hypertension 34%, diabetes mellitus 30%, high serum total cholesterol 40%, high triglycerides 30%, high LDL cholesterol 39%, low HDL cholesterol 16%, smoking 42%, sedentary habits 65%, positive family history 16%, overweight (BMI >25 kg/m2 ) 37% and 11% of the study subjects had central obesity. Among these, 52% of the study subjects had two or more of these risk factors. Conclusion: The present study shows an increased prevalence of coronary risk factors in the bank employees. There is an urgent need to undertake population based measures and health education to reverse the trend.
